Clear Lens Extraction, or CLE, is an outpatient
procedure designed to reduce or eliminate the need for distance glasses
or contact lenses. In suitable patients it can treat a wide range of near
or farsightedness. A lot of the patients found unsuitable for Laser Eye
Surgery can be treated with this technique.
Unlike other refractive procedures (that change the
shape of the cornea), CLE corrects your vision by removing the
crystalline lens in the eye and replacing it with a new artificial lens
of an appropriate focusing power.
This procedure is virtually the same as a cataract
extraction, except that it is performed on a normal clear lens for the
benefit of vision correction. The lens of the eye is simply exchanged
with an artificial lens of appropriate focusing power, to correct any
short or long sightedness.
This procedure is performed in the main operating
theatre with ‘ultra clean’ airflow system .It literally takes
just a few minutes to complete. Once the procedure has been performed,
you are able to go home. Most cases require 2 follow up visits and some
more. Unless a multi focal or an accommodative implant is used, patients
would require reading spectacles.
