| Company History:
The Birkdale
Clinic was established in 1993 as The Birkdale Clinic
of Ophthalmology, when GP fund-holding scheme made it possible
for private hospitals to treat NHS patients. The clinic initially
focused solely on providing fully comprehensive ophthalmic
services. This most innovative service in a virtual setting
was the brainchild of Dr. Promod Bhatnagar, a Member of the
Royal College of Ophthalmologists, having held a Degree in
Master of Surgery in Ophthalmology for over 30 years. During
the fund-holding days the clinic was contracted to provide
fully comprehensive services by 225 GPs at 62 practices across
the North West and Yorkshire.
During the past 12 years the clinic has grown
into a major provider of healthcare in this country, expanding
its range of services and attracting some of the most talented
surgical and medical experts from across the Globe. Its specialist
divisions cover Ophthalmology (including Laser eye surgery),
Specialist Dental Surgery, Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery, Orthopaedic
and General Surgery.
The high point in Birkdale’s history
was reached during September 2003 when Birkdale was awarded
a contract in the first wave of growing capacity initiative
to treat thousands of NHS patients during the next few years
by the Department of Health. This was after very stringent
bidding process and quality check lasting nearly a year. Only
7 companies were awarded the contract and Birkdale was the
only pure British company to get it. None of the other major
British private hospitals groups including BUPA, Nuffield,
Cappio, BMI and others were successful.
We are proud to be the first Independent Sector Treatment
Centre under the NHS to go live on 1st October 2003!
As Birkdale is an approved provider to the
NHS apart from providing services to private self pay patients,
Birkdale treats thousands of patients every year under the
NHS. The NHS in the following areas have either used in past
